Postcards form a Backpacker

In 2005 an Englishman by the name of Mark Inns followed in the footsteps of explorers of old and embarked on an adventure that would see him circumnavigate the globe through the wilds of Africa round to the Rio Carnival in South America. Read about his adventures in the online diary and discover some of the journeys highlights.

Change to Itinerary

Posted in Africa, Kenya, Mombasa

Today we were supposed to travel to the island of Zanzibar but there are elections in the country this week and the advice is not to travel there because of the potential violence. The Foreign Office advice is as follows:

A general election will be held throughout Tanzania, including Zanzibar, on 30 October. On 9 October, live ammunition and tear gas were used by the Police to break up a crowd at a political rally in Zanzibar. At least 17 people were reported to have been injured, some seriously. There could be further unrest in the run-up to the election. Demonstrations and political rallies should be avoided. If resident in or visiting Zanzibar (Unguja and Pemba) between 24 October 14 November, you should register with the British High Commission. You should ensure that you are careful about, and confident of your security arrangements during this time. See also Political section below.

Due to this we are now at Tiwi Beach Resort close to Mombasa, Kenya. The sea is warm and sand is white and the sun is hot. We are in a hotel on the beach and have been able to go snorkeling, swimming, drinking, sunbathing and enjoying locally caught sea food. I had a big crab for dinner last night. It’s a good life at the moment.
