Happy New Year from Cape Town

Happy New year everyone! Again it’s been strange spending new years eve day on Clifton Beach in Cape Town in the sun topping up my tan, paying football and swimming in the sea. It was a very hot day in the high 30’s a far cry from the weather in the UK at the moment.
On New Years Eve itself the German girls and I cooked a meal at the backpackers on Long Street and started to drink the bottles of cheep Champagne we brought earlier on in the day. At about 22:30 we made our way down to the Victoria & Alfred waterfront and the clock tower. From here we watched the fireworks over the water and doves being released at the stroke of midnight whilst opening some more champagne. Not long after we all returned to Long Street to hit the bars and clubs. The streets were packed full of party revellers and also pick pockets to which a number of people I know here fell prey to. At two o’clock we celebrated again for the New Year in England due to the time difference and had some more drinks to see the sun rise at 5:30 am for the first time in 2006.
