Quad Biking in Swaziland
Posted in Africa, Swaziland,
Leaving from Swaziland Backpackers we met Richard who lives in the Swaziland Mountains with his wife and daughter from where he runs a business taking tourists out on quad bikes to visit the local community, homesteads and places of interest. At R450 I was hesitant but decided to do something as I had had two quiet days in Nelsprit previously.
This was my first time on a quad bike, but took to it very easily. The model I was given was a Yamaha 125 automatic. There was a practice track on the property to get used to the machines before we set off with our guide for the day Oliver. There is some breathtaking scenery in Swaziland and some amazing views allowing you to see all the way to the Mozambique boarder on a clear day like the one we had. We visited a small waterfall and had a swim in pools it created to cool off. The locals don’t venture down to this area because of myths of a seven headed snake and people being swallowed by the river. The population of eels that congregate in balls when feeding and a network of underground rivers that link up with the falls may explain these local legends.
Lunch was provided at one of the homesteads and consisted of local grown tea, avocado sandwiches and homemade orange marmalade. On the way back we visited a bushman cave and a burial ground used by Swaziland’s royalty. At the end of the day we were taken back to Richards house for chicken curry and watched the sunset behind the mountain scenery. I would recommend this as a day out for anyone who finds themselves in Swaziland.
