I'm a Millionaire in Zimbabwe
Posted in Africa, Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls
Yesterday we arrived in Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe after two long days driving and a couple of hours spent at the immigration office at the boarder crossing awaiting our entry visa. The visa was US$55 for the three British passport holders on the truck, US$25 for the Australians and free for the Kiwis.
I have been to the falls this morning to see the millions of gallons of water poring down into the gorge below creating spectacular clouds of spray that fall on you as you walk around as rain. The water is impressive but is at one of the lowest levels of the season so there are some breaks in the falls where there is just the rock face showing through. All the same it is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and impressive to say the least.
Tonight we set out on a evening booze cruse where it may be possible to see a lunar rainbow created over the falls by the full moons light. Tonight on the cruise will also be my first chance to try some of the game meat available in there parts of Africa.
When we arrived yesterday I changed some money so I could pay for dinner. To change money you can visit the banks but you get a much better rate on the black market. Being on an organised tour we have a contact to change the money for us that we know is not going to give us a wad of newspaper as they commonly do on the streets or is not a cop trying to catch us out. Even so the small number of dollars I changed gave me over three million zim dollars all in ZIM$20,000 notes, trust me its a big pile of cash to carry in your pocket even if its not a lot in real terms.
